I’ve always loved reading the classics—Dickens especially. One of his most famous works, pulled out every year at this time (and rightly so), is A Christmas Carol. With the stingy Scrooge faced with scenes from his past, present, and possible future, he is transformed utterly into a more caring, more generous person. It’s a lovely book to read (or movie to watch) during Christmas and New Year’s as we naturally reflect on the past year and consider the changes we’d like to make moving forward in our lives.
As much as I love A Christmas Carol, Bleak House is another wonderful, often under-appreciated work by Dickens, and its storyline also speaks to the importance of thoughtful choices—ideas that feel especially relevant as we turn the page to a new year.
At its heart, Bleak House is about generations of a family entangled in a long-running court case over a contested will. The case of Jarndyce vs. Jarndyce drags on for years, ensnaring not only the family but also those who come into contact with them. Some characters wisely walk away from the drama and choose to live their lives, while others are consumed by it.
Spoiler Alert: When the court finally reaches a decision, it’s too late—the estate has been entirely consumed by legal fees. There’s nothing left for anyone.
This cautionary tale is more than just a compelling story. It’s a reminder that families are far better off when they can discuss estate matters openly and early. An estate plan crafted with wisdom is a gift to future generations. Thoughtful planning and preparation can prevent confusion, conflict, and unintended consequences.
At Trinity, we believe that legacy is more than just assets, its about values, relationships, and the decisions that shape the future. As we reflect on the past year and look ahead, let’s take a lesson from Dickens: whether it’s Scrooge choosing generosity or the Jarndyce family learning the cost of legal battles over contested wills, the choices we make today can profoundly impact tomorrow. Estate planning is one of those choices—and starting the conversation now is the best gift you can give to those you love.
